A good portable lamp is an outdoor essential. Whether you are out camping, fishing, or just barbecuing in the backyard, such a lamp creates a nice ambiance alongside providing adequate lighting. However, lamps or lanterns designed for the outdoors have a downside. They attract mosquitoes that annoyingly buzz around the light and often leave you with bumps and itching. As a non-toxic and ecological solution to this, designers Mauro and Maurizio are crowdfunding what’s called the Lucilla: a portable lamp that keeps mosquitoes about 3 meters away from your camp, poolside lounger, or even from your bed (when placed on the side table in your room).
Numerous mosquito repellents are already prevalent in the market. Lucilla fittingly differentiates itself with the use of innocuous sonic waves. This helps create safe and lasting protection sans any sort of harmful chemical or toxic emission. All the while, the immaculately designed lamp – with colorful lighting – keeps the environment well-lit and amicable.
The functioning is pretty evident, but there is a little science behind it. The Lucilla lamp is embedded with a frequency sonic emitter, which produces controllable low-frequency sounds to keep at bay the “annoying and dangerous insects that transmit serious diseases.” The mosquitoes cannot enter within the 3-meter radius outdoors, and 25/30 m2 indoors, from where Lucilla resides.
It’s generally perceived that mosquitoes cannot hear. Lucilla developers argue that they have “Johnston’s organ, located in the second segment of the antennae,” for partial ability to hear. To ensure the lamp can use this facet to its advantage, it has three toggleable sonic emission frequencies, which you can change at will, so the mosquitoes do not get accustomed and insensitive to the same frequency.
The inciteful tweak makes the interesting-looking Lucilla lamp more potent and functional lighting equipment for the outdoors where mosquitoes are in plenty. It also can be a delightful addition for the indoors, where it keeps the insects away without emitting chemicals harmful to the inhabitants (humans and pets). For the indoors, the lamp’s diffuser that seems to float in the air is also an additional inciter. Also, its independent dimmable light helps create the right atmosphere for your evenings.

Currently what we see in the images and the provided video are prototypes of the Lucilla made with 3D printing biodegradable material. The body of these lamps is aluminum while the electronic components are made in collaboration with light-cube. Given its construction, the lamp is completely customizable using magnetic attachments making Lucilla the “only portable magnetic lamp against mosquitoes.” The anti-mosquito lamp is being crowdfunded and can be pre-ordered for roughly $90.
