Designers nowadays thrive largely upon altering their perspective on techniques and materials. Exploring design and its process often inspires them to create a final product that is useable yet diverse in numerous ways. This thought directly flows in the latest furniture display, BORDER, showcased at Designart Tokyo 2023 by designers Rikiya Toyoshima and Shoumu Taki.
BORDER is a thoughtful furniture collection made from uneven and surplus material lying idle in the storage house. The collection is an amalgamation of usable items such as a table, stool, light and a partition providing interior solutions for both, large and small spaces.
The designers worked on the leftover articles of the original material procured from a workshop in Okayama Prefecture. A uniform aspect is seen transcending throughout the items in the collection. Hollow polycarbonate material is upcycled into transparent furniture pieces. The use of polycarbonate is purposely made owing to its high strength and resistance to impact. Caulking material was driven into grooves to create joints for displaying the evenness of the material.

A smooth, broad and large table is seen resting on two long and sturdy legs, whereas the stools are made small and have been designed with a see-through appearance. A large-sized light and an undulating partition reflect the uniformity of material and pattern.
The furniture is capable of standing alone or can be clubbed with other pieces adorning your home or office. BORDER furniture collection is largely aimed toward the ingenious use of material that would have otherwise headed for disposal.
