Furniture designers are ever so determined to safeguard traditional craftsmanship while catering to the dynamic, ever-evolving needs of modern-day customers. To that accord, the big league player Herman Miller has collaborated with Portugal-based Singaporean designer Gabriel Tan to create the luxurious Luva Modular Sofa group along with Cyclade Tables.
The Luva Modular Sofa is irresistibly versatile with various possible configurations including an armchair, chaise, and sofa or sectional. Portuguese for ‘glove,’ the flexible sofa displays a soft grip and padded feel that intentionally echoes the shape of rolled Japanese futons.
“We’re thrilled with our partnership with Gabriel. Herman Miller takes pride in collaborating with the world’s best designers. Tan is a designer who is dedicated to preserving and elevating craftsmanship while creating dynamic furnishings that support the evolving needs of today’s customer, wherever they are,” said Ben Watson, President of Herman Miller.
Materialized from soft foam – grounded in natural textiles and organic lines – Luva can expand into an open back, allowing a relaxed lounge posture. The furniture can also take the shape of a closed fist wherein it provides a supported seat suitable for both chatting and work. It can even turn into a detachable ottoman. There is a hidden bar next to the bottom of the seat that allows the user to experiment with the desired configurations without changing the aesthetic of the plush sofa.
“When a design is successful, different people can read it in different ways. Depending on where you’re from, you can interpret and relate to these designs in a totally different way from somebody else across the world,” said Tan.

Tan also designed a group of side tables – dubbed Cyclade Tables – for the furnishing house. Inspired by the form of Pangea, Tan’s Cyclade Tables display three tables emulating an island that comes together and flows apart seamlessly. Blending and nesting together, this intriguing triad of tables sits at different heights and purposes. The low-lying table among the lot comes with a glass bowl to hold greenery, display objects, or a number of purposes.
The Luva Modular Sofa represents the ageless beauty that is innate in the prestigious furniture house. A three-seater Luva will cost you over $10,000 but given the brilliant design of the furniture piece, it’s fair to say that it comes at a bargain price.
