UK-based Gomi design studio has come into the limelight for its quirky and earth-friendly Bluetooth speakers made from waste plastic. Initially introduced through a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2021, these wireless speakers feature a marbling texture of recycled plastic that lends them a unique visual appeal. The startup is now transitioning into an e-commerce business, with the official launch of its limited edition series of the Collection One portable Bluetooth speakers available through its website.
The design studio sees plastic waste as a resource that can be transformed into beautiful and functional design objects. Collection One does the same and repurposes over six tons of waste material bound to end up in landfills or incinerated.
Each portable speaker will reuse about 45 plastic bags and lithium batteries from e-bike batteries. Furthermore, the speaker features a fully modular design that ensures lifetime reparability and longevity to empower Gomi’s circular philosophy. The speaker has 29 components in total, that can be easily replaced or repaired, and the Bluetooth connectivity can also be upgraded.
Talking of the eye-pleasing aesthetics of the portable speaker, it’s a result of the studio’s artisanal approach to repurposing plastics. Featuring a rectangular body, each speaker is characterized by a marbling pattern that is distinct in every product. To highlight the individuality of these colored patterns, a unique edition number will be marked on each of these speakers.
