Kateryna Sokolova doesn’t need an introduction. She has cemented her place as one of the top designers to have come out of Ukraine. Despite her core competence lying in furniture and lighting design, she also comes up with intriguing home décor pieces every now and then. Kateryna recently debuted a series of blown glass vases and carafes for NOOM, the collection she dubbed Gutta.
These multifunctional glass vases double as sculptural pieces and pay homage to the ancient glassblower-artist technique ‘guta,’ which goes back to the times of the medieval state Kyivan Rus’, hence deriving the name.
Kateryna aimed to explore the glass’s unique properties and create simple yet elegant objects that evoke a feeling of frozen movement. Crafted by local glass smiths, the vases are both highly contemporary in their form yet ingrained in history with their exquisite craftsmanship and age-old techniques, the studio mentions.
In an exclusive interview with Homecrux earlier this year, Katreyna stated, “Many brands are now betting on artistic accent pieces. When it comes to NOOM, our motive has always been to design unique shapes that are pleasant to the touch features eye-catching textures, and, of course, a hint of handmade work.”

Apart from showcasing the malleability of the material, the vases and carafes also mimic water droplets and boast a fluid form. “I wanted to convey the mysterious power of nature and a sense of rhythm,” Kateryna adds. The design of the vase looks so marvelous that it generates a psychedelic feeling that the vase is about to slip off the edge of the table.
Not to mention, these sculptural vases add aesthetics to any room. “Every vase has been hand blown, which makes it unique and beautiful in its imperfection,” Kateryna concluded. To those interested, the Gutta vase collection by NOOM is up for grabs and would cost around $490 apiece.
