I was caught up in a casual chat with Jeff Forrest, CEO of Stacklab, when the multidisciplinary design studio founder disclosed his plans for the Salone del Mobile 2022. Forrest revealed that Stacklab’s sister brand, Stackabl will be introducing a brand new lighting collection at the Milan fest. Balancing utility with great design, the collection features nine pendant lights that look dressed to kill. All these are made of a number of felt discs put together in a cylindrical shape. Incredibly, the lights can be suspended both vertically and horizontally.
Staying true to its philosophy of turning waste into wonder, Stackabl lighting collection throws emphasis majorly on sustainable design. The lighting fixtures are made of upcycled felt and aluminum and also feature energy-saving LEDs in them.
Leveraging its original network of regional suppliers and manufacturers, the Toronto-based brand generally uses similar components in its furniture collections. An experience with materials has helped designers – summoned by Stackabl for the collection – to opt for a holistic approach while configuring the interior components and exterior elements of these fixtures.
The Stackabl’s debut lighting collection is designed by prominent designers Sarah Coleman, Anthony Frank Keeler, and Wisse Trooster who have configured three lights each. All nine pendant lights would be exhibited during the Milan design week from June 7 to 12. The collection is not just a treat to the eyes but also a true embodiment of Stackabl’s philosophy of encouraging regional manufacturing and promoting a circular economy.
Jeff Forrest told Homecrux,
I am currently trying to settle in Milan and gearing for the big launch of our pendant lights. Our philosophy is always to begin with the bigger issues and material constraints, and design in reverse until we arrive at form and product. Rather than designing the item first and then pondering about what material to use, Stackabl builds an intricate system based around specific existing materials and how they can be processed for optimal usage. Algorithms dictate the look, not whimsy.

Out of the nine pendants, five are customizable to user preference. Consumers can customize the bespoke design by choosing the length of the internal structure and the diameter of the felt discs. The Stackabl lighting collection will start at $750. There is no official word on when it will be available, but we will keep you posted as soon as we hear something.
