The Magic Box is a transformative, pop-up whisky tasting installation that celebrates Tasmanian design, craft and whisky. It is designed by the Australian company Liminal Objects in collaboration with Van Tuil Studio. Just as a wine barrel in appearance, it features an adaptable design that can be adjusted according to the size of the get-together. It is designed for presentations and touring while showcasing a slice of Tasmania.
The Magic Box is a charred barrel that opens like the petals of a flower. In presentation mode, the top two trays pivot open to suit the gathering size, revealing the warmth of the Tasmanian oak interior. These sliced parts provide a flat surface to put on drinks and glasses while the base includes storage drawers for whiskey bottles and glasses.
The conscious use of Tasmanian sustainable timbers, the native Tasmanian Fagus leaf etched on the presentation trays and the innovative charring of the ‘barrel’ create an aesthetically dramatic design, celebrate sustainability and provides an environmentally friendly transport solution.
The Magic Box has received the 2020 Australian Timber Design Award and Australian Interior Design Award, plus is Top Design Winner in Event Supplies/Exhibition and Trade Show Display at European Product Design Award 2020.
