Milan-based startup Krill Design aims to recycle organic waste from the food industry through a closed-loop production, turning them into new materials for eco-responsible products. The design studio has recently come up with the Ohmie Orange Lamp that is touted as the world’s first circular design lamp made of orange peels created using 3D printing technology.

Sleek, elegant, and sustainable, this table lamp provides a smarter way to manage waste from the food chain. The design studio has created a velvety and sturdy material by mixing orange peels and a biopolymeric base derived from vegetable starches enriched with orange peels. The material retains the appearance of the original intact and is fully compostable at the end of its life.

The Ohmie orange peel lamp sports a patterned surface, an angled light beam and a dimmer switch for a flexible user experience. It is designed to be a long-lasting lighting product, while it is also able to be discarded sustainably like organic waste.

The Ohmie orange peel lamp is currently being crowd-funded through Kickstarter and those willing to own it, can pledge a minimum €72 (about $85). Shipping is expected in November 2021. Krill Design plans to create a whole line of Citrus furniture and we are waiting to see how that unfolds.
