New York-based design studio Nervous System has created a creative staircase railing for their new studio building in Palenville, NY. Dubbed Corollaria, it is an algorithmically-generated, laser-cut steel railing featuring a unique pattern inspired by cross-sections of plant tissues. The pattern is generated by the latest version of Nervous System’s Corollaria software, which uses an optimization process of anisotropic centroidal Voronoi diagrams.
The 40-ft-long railing showcases different patterns throughout the staircase. Beginning at the bottom of the staircase, waves of dense cells shift into rings, then spirals, and finally to large scale radial cells. The patterns recall morphologies seen in cross-sections of plant tissues.
The railing is made from 10 gauge steel finished in powder-coated matte black. The steel is laser-cut by Hatfield Metal Fabrication in Poughkeepsie, NY. There is also a wood top rail fabricated from laser-cut wood pieces to finish the staircase.

The Corollaria railing that functions as a ‘sculptural element winding through space,’ is partitioned into six panels for ease of transportation and installation.
