There are no bounds to creativity and imagination – DIYers prove this time and again. Case in point, Harry Newman – UK-based dad-to-be who has crafted a crib for his unborn child out of a Jack Daniel’s whisky barrel. You may have seen barrel furniture before but this is made with love and affection.
Harry and his partner Kayleigh Arber are excited about their coming baby; in this glee, they wanted to build something for the baby which is very personal and not just bought off the shelf. In an interview with LADbible he informed; “After finding out we were going to have our first child I decided I wanted to hand make something rather than just buying a standard item off the shelf.”
According to Harry, the upcycling project took around 50 hours; the majority of the work included sanding and prepping the surface. A big opening is cut out in an oak barrel vertically and lined with a custom mattress on the inside to ensure comfort for the baby. The barrel is charred on the inside and cleaned with alcohol for safety so it can be used as a sleeper cot during the day.

The barrel baby crib is sealed using water-based wood treatments to avoid a high Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from building up in the child-friendly furniture. The cot sits on a wooden base that keeps it stable and at a decent height from the floor.
The whisky barrel was turned into a baby cot for about £90 ($114). Harry shared photos of his project online where it has received plenty of love.
