American red oak is a dominant species in the US hardwood forests, distinguished by its porous nature, bendable properties and distinctive grain. The wood is not as popular in Europe, which would have possibly been the idea behind ‘Blushing Bar’ that neatly showcases design possibilities with American red oak.
Initiated by the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC), Europe, this bar is a result of a collaboration between architects Chan + Eayrs and Sebastian Cox design studio. Unlike conventional linear bars, this features an elegant round shape, modular design and a unique blushing finish achieved by injecting red ink into red oak wood using compressed air.
AHEC European director David Venables said,
The bar is a perfect example of what can be accomplished by bringing together the best of design, creativity and craftsmanship. The special finish achieved by injecting ink into the wood’s cell structure is a first for a design product. It was exciting to be part of something experimental.
This experimental bar design makes most of the porous quality of the American red oak. With the use of a specially designed machine, the wood was uniquely colored by Cox Studio. They injecting red ink into the pores in the oak to give it a distinct hue throughout.
Architect Merlin Eayrs said,
Red oak has a pinkish flesh-like hue, and a porous nature which has capillaries/veins so open you can blow through a short section. These wood veins have been pumped through with deep pink dye by Sebastian Cox, like blood-filled veins through love struck flesh.
The Blushing Bar is made from ten freestanding modules that are fitted with a variety of equipment and amenities including sinks, chopping boards, flower beds, and herb gardens. It is made using different techniques including CNC-cutting, steam bending, thermal modification, coopering, etc.
The bar has separate areas for alcohol and soft drinks. There’s even a tap and sink, made out of red oak. The tap is lined with a flexible plastic hose with an elegant brass end.
