Coffin chair by Central Saint Martins graduate Yeyang Liao is a unique piece of furniture that is designed to be cremated along with its owner after death. There is no use of metal parts in the making and the chair consists of 12 strips of wood molded using highly precise digital techniques. The molded wood replicates the curvature of a traditional coffin and can even be burnt.
This all-wood, Coffin chair serves like standard furniture and can be transformed into a body casing for cremation after death. The base of the chair can be expanded according to the length of a human body. Its bent wooden elements unfurl like a spring, leaving a series of small gaps in a wooden casing, which might minimize the use of wood.
Liao says that the Chinese government is looking to forbid the practice of burial and implement a comprehensive policy of cremation. As part of the Green Funeral movement initiated by the government in 2018, the national goal is to cut the burial ceremonies half by 2020. For this, the government is even seizing or destroying coffins that families bought for their loved ones.

This inspired Liao for this intriguing chair design. It would help Chinese families in paying respect to their deceased and appease the government as well.
