Inspired by the deep water squid commonly known as Spirula, the contoured speakers designed by Deeptime evoke a sense of connection with nature. That fact is exemplified from the knowledge that the handcrafted speakers are 3D printed from silica sand. Aptly named Spirula, the smooth flowing design of the passive satellite speaker also assists in producing rich acoustics and bass levels.
Turing sand into a robust 80-watt speaker unit is a challenge in itself and Deeptime seem to have found a solution in their bespoke hardener which provides solidity to the cabinet by turning it into an airtight space. This results in brilliant sound quality for high, medium, and low end of the audible frequencies.
This spiral shape stops the waves from being radiated from the rear of the driver unit while the absorbent fiber on the inside soaks up sound energy. The 3” driver unit having a bamboo fiber paper cone delivers an impressive frequency response ranging from 75 Hz – 20 kHz.
Also, noticeable elements of the speaker are the sharp horn-shaped protrusions which act as a steady base when kept on a desk. Truly they are made for a modern home infused with the subtleness of nature-inspired décor elements.
Spirula can be paired with Thunderstone subwoofer which is also made from sand. Its shape is inspired by the cutting tools (arrowheads and axes) found in plowed fields, which apparently were believed to have fallen from the sky and worshipped like gods.
