North America is set to experience a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024. It is a rare event and people are celebrating it in their ways. Some companies are selling solar eclipse-themed foods, while some are throwing parties at restaurants and their homes to mark this occasion. Meanwhile, countless Airbnbs and other vacation rentals are sold out in the US where skywatchers are going to enjoy this celestial event in peace.
If you’re throwing a party today, and don’t want your guests to be hungry while gazing at the total solar eclipse, here are a few foods, beverages, and desserts that can rock your solar eclipse-themed party.
1. Black-Out Eclipse-Themed Cupcakes
Sprinkles Cupcakes will be giving their limited edition Black-Out Eclipse-Themed Cupcakes to the first 50 customers in August 2017, when North America witnessed a total solar eclipse after 99 years. Keeping the eclipse theme in mind, these cupcakes were made with Dutch black cocoa, the “deepest, darkest” chocolate cake topped with whipped chocolate ganache. Cupcakes were available for $3.95 each in-store and Sprinkles’ Cupcake ATM. If you are throwing a solar eclipse party, give the bakery a hollar to get these delicious treats baked on order.
2. Solar Eclipse-Themed Doughnuts
Giving a chocolaty spin to solar eclipse-themed food, North Carolina-based Krispy Kreme has created out-of-this-world Total Solar Eclipse Doughnuts. This tasty treat will feature an “Original Glazed doughnut dipped in black chocolate icing, sprinkled with silver sprinkles, piped with a butter creme made with OREO cookie pieces, and topped with an OREO cookie.” The doughnuts will be sold at participating Krispy Kreme locations across the United States for a limited time only.
3. Eclipse Magic Cone
Tyler Malek co-founder of Salt & Straw and ice cream bar Wiz Bang Bar in Portland, Oregon, came up with his version of ice cream, dubbed Eclipse Magic Cone back in the day. To celebrate this rare natural phenomenon, his team created a space-obsessed ice cream with a burnt coconut ash waffle cone painted with some edible gold. It further included homemade marshmallow fluff and scoops of turmeric ice cream that “tastes like sunshine,” according to Malek, all topped off with a cocoa-black sesame shell and charcoal-dusted pop rocks. Get this summer treat for your party on order from the ice cream shop.
4. Galaxy Cookies and Swirl Cupcakes
Mini Delights Bake Shoppe in Elkhart, Indiana, created Galaxy Swirl Cupcakes and “Supernova” Macarons to mark this rare occasion. The cupcakes were a vanilla cake with white buttercream, topped with edible glitter and sugar stars. The macarons were French vanilla macarons with a Swiss meringue buttercream filling, decorated with edible “paint splatter” and edible glitter. You can whip these tasty goodies at home or get these made to order.
5. Hostess Golden CupCake
Hostess has named its Hostess Golden CupCake as the official snack of the total solar eclipse. Just like the moon blocks the golden rays of the sun, the darkened color of chocolate frosting covers the surface of the golden cake. Hostess Brands will be celebrating the eclipse by giving out free samples of Golden CupCakes at observation points near its headquarters in Kansas City, MO.
6. Duck Donuts Eclipse Treat
Duck Donuts in the spirit of the total solar eclipse revealed its limited-time assortment of eclipse doughnuts. The donuts included Duck’s original cake doughnuts with chocolate icing and chocolate sprinkles, vanilla icing with Oreo and hot fudge drizzle, chocolate icing with marshmallow drizzle and more eclipse-inspired combinations. That was 2017, but given that the donut shop still has many made-to-order options, you can probably get these sweet balls of dough for a celestial party. Or you can get a bit creative and make them in your kitchen.
7. All-You-Can-Eat “Mooncakes”
Denny’s celebrated the last eclipse with an offer of all-you-can-eat “Mooncakes” for just $4. You can simply stop by any participating Denny’s store and you’ll be invited to fill up on $4 all-you-can-eat buttermilk “Mooncakes,” which are shaped like the real moon. You can recreate this pancake-like treat for your party or get them made to order this year.
8. Half-Moon Cookies
Baking cookies needs nothing but a simple recipe. This recipe for Half Moon cookies by Upstate Ramblings is the perfect cookie recipe for celebrating this rare celestial event. The black and white baked goodies are sweet, chewy and perfect for the occasion so get your apron on and bake some.
